TECTERRA: Tell us about Skymatics
EJ Burrows: Skymatics is a data analytics company that is mainly focused on the use of drone data, mostly for agriculture and construction industries.
TECTERRA: What did TECTERRA help you build? Tell us about the product.
EJ Burrows: The product that TECTERRA helped us build is called SkyClaim. SkyClaim is basically a software that allows farmers and crop insurance companies to use drone data to better understand crop insurance claims and to help speed up the process. TECTERRA came along when we were in the very early stages of development. Our full release was actually just two days ago, so it’s just come out and we’ve got some good traction. Previous to the launch we engaged Beta customers for about six months, but now SkyClaim is hitting the market and 2018 will be the first season it’s out in full force.
TECTERRA: How is this product revolutionizing an industry or changing a market?
EJ Burrows: Crop insurance is very different from other types of insurance. It’s really easy for auto insurance, for example, to look up the cost of a part when there is a car accident, but with crop insurance adjusting it’s somewhat subjective when it comes to trying to take in a snapshot of an entire 650 acre field for example. So one of the things we are doing is using the drone data to get a full feel of a snapshot to help the adjusters understand the extent of damages a little bit better. The software helps the farmers and the insurance companies.
TECTERRA: How is the geospatial industry changing and how is your company responding to this change?
EJ Burrows: Looking at the geospatial industry in the past, it seems like it was more of a warehousing effort. You had GIS professionals that were collecting data and warehousing these large amounts of data for governments and large organizations. Today, a lot more companies like Skymatics are accessing a lot of that big data and providing more targeted products to companies to be utilized, not just stored.
TECTERRA: What does it mean to be nominated for the Mastering New Markets Award?
EJ Burrows: It’s great! Especially for a lot of our employees. I’m one of the guys that helps run the show but I don’t necessarily do all the data analytics but it’s great to have some validation for what you spend two to three years working on.
